Sending mails (every 2 weeks to each other)- children wrote about their pets (or favorite pet) – names, descriptions, and food they eat, how they take care of them
We prepared the names of animals – in English, Maltese and Slovak language
Children created a graph of their pets and later they discussed the differences and similarities between the Maltese and the Slovak graphs. We used a powerpoint presentation to create our graph. We saved the powerpoint as a powerpoint presentation and also as a jpg, so that we can use the slide as a picture whenever necessary.

Balloon Release
To celebrating eTwinning’s 5th Birthday, we released 15 balloons with a message tied to each one: “This is a message…if you receive this balloon, email us on sgpc.hamrungp.pr@gov.mt

At Easter time we decided to change our cupcakes into chicks and sheep…and we did. The end result was wonderful.

The children brought two cupcakes each. They used yellow food colouring to colour some coconuts. They spread jam over the cupcakes and sprinkled yellow coconuts, added smarties for eyes and mouth and the chicks were ready. To make sheep, they used white coconuts and decorated them with marshmallows.

Lizzie The Maltese Lizard

I am Lizzy the lizard and I am a reptile because my skin is scaly. I eat ants and small insects. I need the sun to keep me warm because I am a cold-blooded animal. I hide away during the winter season as the weather is too cold for me, but you can see me again in your garden at springtime and during the warm summer months. I lay eggs in secret nooks and crannies in rubble walls to be safe from my enemies because the shell of my eggs is very soft. My enemies are snakes, birds, cats and also people especially children who catch me, break off my tail and throw stones at me. I have feelings just like you and I hurt when you attack me. Besides, I have done nothing wrong to you – I am and want to be your friend.

I am a member of the dinosaur family but I am much smaller. The word dinosaur means “terrible lizard” but I am not a terrible creature at all. In Malta I am protected by law because you find my species only on this island and so I am known as “Maltese Wall Lizard.” I am a male lizard so my back is bright green with black spots, my tummy is pale and my neck is yellow. My female friends are brown and they are smaller in size.

There are many other species of lizards and the ones that live on Filfla are black. Sometimes, you can see reptiles running up your walls at night and these are very similar to us but they are not lizards. They are geckoes.

If you want to be friends with me, feed me small juicy tomato bits regularly when you see me in your garden and I will trust you and eat out of your hand! I am happy to be a lizard because I enjoy the warm sunshine and the quiet and peaceful environment of your gardens.

The Maltese Frog

The frog found in Malta and Gozo is known as the Mediterranean Maltese Painted Frog. This animal is an amphibian. It has colourful markings and is usually olive-brown in colour with large dark spots. Its belly is whitish. The body is stout with a flat wide head. The pupil in its eyes is shaped like an upside-down droplet.
The Mediterranean Maltese Painted Frog is common in damp areas near water, in open landscapes, in orchards and vineyards, as well as on campsites. They are also known to live and breed in water. In the dry Summer months, the Mediterranean Maltese Painted Frog hibernates in burrows to find pools supplied by underground freshwater streams.
The Mediterranean Maltese Painted Frog eats geckos and when they find no food they sometimes eat small tadpoles or younger frogs. Hedgehogs and weasels and snakes are their enemies because they catch them for food. This frog is also found in Spain.

The Mediterranean Maltese Painted Frog is also an endangered animal in Malta and Gozo because the ground-water levels are decreasing. This animal is also protected by law in the Maltese islands.

The Maltese Hedgehog

The hedgehog is a cute little animal and it is a mammal. The Maltese hedgehog has an adorable little raccoon-like face, with beady little black eyes and a small pointy nose that seems to twitch constantly, checking out the different odors of the environment. Its little white tummy is extremely soft and is covered with short, white hair. It has a short, stubby tail, but this is rarely seen because they keep it tucked up close their bodies. With its tiny little legs and round bodies, it is a real sight to see it scurry across the ground. It has spines on its back and usually rolls up into a tight ball when it is frightened or in danger and in this position the hedgehog looks very much like a sea-urchin.

There are two types of hedgehogs in Malta. These are pale and dark in colour. Maltese hedgehogs love to eat beetles and they are very clean animals. In Malta this cute animal is associated with someone who is tidy and keeps his environment spic and span. They are mostly found near agricultural areas. Sometimes, hedgehogs are also found at Għajn Tuffieħa.

Unfortunately these cute animals are victims of road casualities. Since roads are often close to their habitat areas, they wander on to these roads and often end up being run over by cars or motors. People need to be aware of this especially in areas with heavy traffic close to areas were the hedgehog lives especially at night time.

Hedgehogs are also in danger because many people are destroying the habitat were the hedgehog lives to build houses and other buildings and so this animal is not finding a place to live. This animal lives in fields most of the time. Farmers who own fields are using pesticides and insecticides to kill insects and worms which harm their crops and so the hedgehog is dying because his food is becoming poisonous.

The hedgehog is protected by law in Malta and people cannot catch it and keep it as a pet. Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals that roam at night in search for food. At springtime, it is common to see adult hedgehogs walking around followed by their young ones.

We look forward to the book which we're writing and drawing with our friends from Malta. We made a notice-board. We're giving here the parts of our story in the Slovak and English language which are already finished.

Tešíme sa na knihu, ktorú píšeme a kreslíme s našimi priateľmi z Malty. Urobili sme si nástenku. Dávame na ňu časti nášho príbehu v slovenskom a anglickom jazyku, ktoré už sú ukončené.

We have sent our booklet to Malta together with our Easter greetings. You can´t imagine how happy we are to get presents form our friends. We have received a parcel with a big surprise - Easter gretings, chocolate eggs and typical Easter cake of Malta

After seeing results of the work of our friends from Malta, we have decided to make animals form vegetable and fruit. Each child brought materials for their work. It was the high time for fantasy to start working. It has really worked as you can see here

It was a big excitement to discover voki. We have tried to create our pets and animals we like and describe them. We have spent lots of time with this and realized that this is funny way how to learn English...

We have decided to show our friends school and our school-life.

Children have made this video themselves. Teacher just gave them camera and let children decide what to show their friends in Malta. It was really big excitement, especially interviewing our headmaster. Children did great job and are happy and proud after seeing results.

We are looking forward to see our friends in Malta and their school.

Rozhodli sme sa ukázať našim priateľom školu a náš život v škole. Deti robili video samé, pani učiteľka im dala do rúk kameru a nechala ich rozhodnúť, čo ukážu svojim priateľom na Malte. Bolo to naozaj veľké vzrušenie, predovšetkým rozhovor s pani riaditeľkou školy. Deti urobili skvelú prácu a sú naozaj šťastné a hrdé po vzhliadnutí výsledku ich snaženia.

We have made 2 graphs. And why? We love animals and we enjoy work on our project. And a project has inspired us that we want to care about other pets. We asked parents, grandparents and you can see the results on our new graph and table.

During lesson of Informatics we have compared Slovak and Maltese graphs. Slovak children have two graphs of animals now, because we have much more pets than we had in February. Here are some comments from our observations:

We had 6 dogs in February and we have 12 dogs now. For example, we still have 3 hamsters. And fish? It was only one and there are 34 . (Hana, Sara)

Maltese children have 5 dogs less than Slovak children. We have 3 rabbits less than Malta.

We had less pets in February than in April. Fish were added to us the most. The Maltese children have a lot of tortoises. They have 11, we have 3. (Natka)

We have more birds and dogs than Maltese children. The animals are constantly increasing to us, because we buy new or pets were borned. (Beba)

At first we had 15 pets, and then we had 66 ones. Malta has 37 animals. (Nana)

Slovak children have 29 pets more than Maltese children. Malta and Slovakia have 19 tortoises together. (Veronika, Dominika)

Slovak children have the most dogs. It’s maybe because “The dog is the best friend of a man”.

Puss in Boots - Carnival at School

Friday 12th February was Carnival Day at school. All children wore wonderful costumes. One child came wearing a Puss in Boots costume and he was an inspiration to add the story of Puss in Boots to our project. He related the story himself and was recorded using Audacity. The story was then uploaded on a speaking avatar with the boy wearing his costume in the background.

Animal Awareness Day

On the 4th of October, we celebrated “Animal Awareness Day” as this day happens to be the feast of St. Francis of Assisi who loved animals dearly. We talked a lot about animals and during creative writing session, children wrote about themselves pretending to be monkeys. Some samples of this creative writing can be seen on the blog.

My name is Daniela. I am black and my eyes are black too. I am a little thin monkey and I live in the jungle. I am scared of wild animals. I like to eat coconuts, bananas and peanuts. I like to break coconut shells to eat what is inside. I chatter out loud and swing on the trees and I also like to swing from one tree to another. I am intelligent and mischievous and I am a mammal because I give milk to my little ones. I sleep under a tree or on a tree branch. I like to play with other monkeys and if someone tries to catch me, I run as fast as I can to a safe place. I love being a monkey because I love being free!

Happy to start our project

We have started our project with big enthusiasm. Children created Noah´s arch with their pets and put it to the notice board together with names of children participated in the project (both Slovakian and Maltese).

Začali sme pracovať na projekte s veľkým nadšením. Vytvorili sme Noemovu archu a každý žiak nakreslil svoje obľúbené zvieratko, ktoré vložil na archu. Noemovu archu sme umiestnili na nástenku, kde sme pridali aj mená detí, ktoré robia projekt .
